Australian energy infrastructure company Viva Energy has received Federal Environment Approval for its proposed liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal project in Geelong, Australia.

Viva Energy’s proposed gas station in Geelong received formal support under the federal Environment Protection and Biodiversity Conservation Act (EPBC) at the beginning of April 2025.
The company welcomed the EPBC Environment Minister’s approval, which recognizes that the proposed LNG terminal can proceed, subject to conditions, with acceptable environmental impacts.
The approval follows that of the Victorian Government Positive review From the Energy Infrastructure Project Environmental Impact Statement in May 2026. The company intends to build this gas plant at the Geelong refinery quay.
Viva describes its LNG terminals as… “It is the best and most advanced project in Victoria, capable of providing a reliable supply to replace Victoria’s rapidly declining natural gas and providing energy security for south-eastern Australia.”
According to the Australian company, comprehensive studies conducted by independent experts have shown that the gas plant’s operations will not negatively impact the marine environment of Corio Bay or the Ramsar wetlands.
Last year, Viva hired Poten & Partners will seek expressions of interest from the global maritime industry to supply an existing FSRU or modify an LNG carrier into a terminal FSRU.
