ICMM president addresses critical minerals crisis at global mining conference

Rohitesh Dhawan, President & CEO International Council on Mining and Metallurgy (ICMM)you will join global leaders at the 2026 World Mining Congress (WMC), one of the most important international gatherings in the mining industry.

Dhawan chairs ICMM, an organization of 26 executives from the world’s leading mining and metals companies. Under his leadership, the organization has spearheaded unprecedented commitments across the industry, including the goal of achieving net-zero emissions, as well as initiatives focused on diversity, equity, inclusion and transparency.

High demand creates pressure on the industry

In a recent analysis, Dhawan warned that the growing demand for minerals is putting unprecedented pressure on the industry. “There are two structural forces that are reshaping demand for metals, and neither is going away,” he said recently. “One is demographic: more people living in cities, expecting the basic amenities of modern life. The other is technological: more energy-hungry data centers and mineral-intensive renewable energy.”

He stressed the need to rethink the current approach taken by the sector, and suggested treating critical minerals as public goods, given their strategic importance to economic development, energy security, and global stability.

Executive to moderate high-level discussion

Dhawan will participate in a high-level panel on day two of the World Mining Congress 2026, where he will moderate “Fireside Chat: The Socratic Search for Truth,” featuring Mark Cutifani, Partner at Odin Partnership, and Robert Friedland, Chairman of Ivanhoe Mines.

The WMC conference takes place from 24 to 26 June in Lima and brings together CEOs, government authorities, experts and leaders from the global mining industry. The event provides a platform for industry leaders to address critical challenges facing the sector as demand for metals continues to rise globally.

Registration is now open to attend the conference on the official website of the event: www.Wmc2026.org
