The Japanese trio launches a pilot project to supply ammonia to ships in Singapore


Japan’s Sumitomo Corporation, Kawasaki Kisen Kaisha (‘K’ Line) and Nippon Yusen Kabushiki Kaisha (NYK Line) have jointly applied to operate a demonstration project on ammonia bunkering for ships in Singapore, based on a memorandum of understanding (MoU) from last month to conduct a front-end engineering design (FEED) study and explore a new ammonia bunkering vessel property.

Coordinated by Sumitomo, the project will see the companies conduct a trial supply of ammonia fuel using a ship-to-ship (STS) transfer method, using a bunkering vessel compliant with requirements set by the Singapore Government, marking the first demonstration of ammonia bunkering by the collaborators.

Sumitomo said the feasibility studies will evaluate supply facilities with operational risk management, establish procedures, and evaluate environmental and safety factors to ensure the feasibility of a safe and sustainable ammonia fuel supply.

The demonstration project was selected for the FY 2024 Supplemental Budget Grant for “Future-Oriented Co-Innovation Project for the Global South (Large-Scale Demonstration – ASEAN Member States: Second Call for Proposals)”funded by the Ministry of Economy, Trade and Industry through the AEM-METI Economic and Industrial Cooperation Committee (AMEICC), effective March 23, 2026.

“As a large-scale initiative, the pilot project will be crucial in overcoming the technical and operational challenges that must be addressed before commercial services can be fully achieved. Given the significant costs associated with the demonstration phase, financial support from this grant will be pivotal in ensuring the feasibility of the project and its successful implementation.” Sumitomo said.

As a reminder, Sumitomo Corporation, “K” Line and NYK Line stated on March 17 that they have entered into a memorandum of understanding To jointly conduct a FEED study and explore ownership of a new ammonia bunkering vessel (N-ABV) for application in Singapore.

The tripartite partnership is now developing detailed studies covering the basic vessel design, technical specifications, safety and operational requirements, as well as a structuring and ownership model tailored to the ammonia fuel market in Singapore.
