New construction orders accelerate in the wet sector



MCrude and liquefied natural gas (LNG) tankers were on the list of newbuild orders last week. In its latest weekly report, shipbroker Banchero Costa said: “In the gas tanker sector, China’s Zhoushan Dashenzhou Shipbuilding Company has secured an order for 3 10,000 cubic meter LNG/ammonia tankers from Brazil’s Transpetro, a subsidiary of Petrobras. Each is priced at $53 million, and is scheduled for delivery in April 2028, August 2028 and May 2029. In the tanker sector, Chinese shipbuilder Taizhou Kouan has secured an order for two 114,000 tonne LR2 product tankers from Chinese company Shishi Dingsheng Shipping. The vessels are dual-fuel LNG-ready, fully compliant with Tier III and EEDI standards, with delivery scheduled for March-June 2029. In the chemicals sector, Japanese company Kitanihon Shipbuilding has secured an order for 4 x stainless steel chemical tankers with capacity. The entire 40,000 tons are originally intended for Norwegian Odfjell for Japanese ownership and will be purchased by Odfjell upon completion of deliveries. The total contract value is approximately $290 million, and is scheduled to be delivered from March 2027 to December 2027.

Meanwhile, in the S&P market, shipbroker Exclusive added, “S&P drywall activity remained flat this week, with a notable concentration of deals in the Supramax sector. In the post-Panamax sector, ‘Ocean Fairy’ – 87K/2010 Hudong Zhonghua sold for US$16M, while ‘Corona Brave’ – 88K/2006 fetched Imabari priced in Moving to the Panamax sector, the “Pabur” – 76K/2012 Taizhou Kouan mill was sold for US$16.5 mill, while the “Donousa” – 76K/2004 Tsuneishi mill was traded for US$9.65 mill.

In the Ultramax segment, a recent “Amis Power” – 64K/2018 Tsuneishi Cebu achieved a strong price tag of US$32 million. In the Supramax segment, “Astra Perseus” – 58K/2012 DSME Shandong was sold for US$16.8 million. In the same sector, “Honcho” – 56 thousand/2011 to the Chinese shipping industry and “Honor” – 57 thousand/2010 COSCO Zhoushan sold one block for low/medium US$13 million each. In addition, ‘Asteris’ – 53K/2007 Yangzhou Dayang sold for US$9.8 million, while ‘Chakravati’ – 55K/2006 Kawasaki achieved a price in the mid-$10s. The older “Vosco Unity” – 53K/2004 Imabari traded for $8.5 million. Finally, in the hand-sized segment, ‘Calobra’ – 35K/2015 Taizhou Maple sold for US$18 mill, while ‘KS Grace’ – 36K/2014 Shikoku achieved US$17 mill.”
