Giant gas discovery in Southeast Asia successfully passes the test

Italian energy giant Eni has revealed the results of a drill stem test (DST) carried out for its recent natural gas discovery off the coast of Indonesia, which confirmed the reservoir’s productivity, strengthening the case for the Kuti Basin III position in the Southeast Asian country.

Eni It revealed the discovery of gas in Jelega-1 Exploration well in April 2026. This gas discovery is located within the Ghanal zone in the Kuti Basin offshore Indonesia, approximately 70 kilometers off the coast of East Kalimantan, with preliminary estimates indicating existing resources of approximately 5 trillion cubic feet (tcf) of gas and 300 million barrels of condensate in the period encountered.

The Italian energy giant has now revealed that the discovery has been tested, with DST results showing high achievability, further fortifying the strategic potential of Indonesia’s Kuti Basin and supporting accelerated development options that take advantage of existing and planned infrastructure.

The reservoir flowed at rates up to 60 million standard cubic feet per day (scfd) during testing, restricted by drilling facilities, and with very limited pressure drop, confirming excellent deliverability. As a result, the Gilega 1 well is estimated to produce at a sustained rate of approximately 200 million standard cubic feet of gas and approximately 10,000 barrels per day of condensate.

The well was drilled in approximately 2,000 meters of water, reached a total depth of approximately 5,100 meters and intersected a large gas column of targeted Miocene age, which has excellent petrophysical properties.

The well test results are seen to support the initial assessment of approximately 5 trillion cubic feet of gas and 300 million barrels of condensate at the site during the time period encountered. This discovery is located next to the undeveloped Jola gas discoveryIt is estimated at about 2 trillion cubic feet of existing gas and 75 million barrels of condensate.

According to Eni, preliminary assessments indicate that the combined Gilega and Gula discoveries could support additional production of around 1 billion standard cubic feet per day of gas and 80,000 barrels per day of condensate. The Plan of Development (POD) is currently being prepared and is expected to be submitted to the Government of Indonesia in the coming weeks.

The POD aims to enable the rapid development of a third production center in the prolific Kutei Basin, along with Jindalu and Gandang Gas Project (Southern Axis) and Jing North and Gehem fields (northern axis)by taking advantage of the development concept currently being implemented for Northern Axis Project.

Studies are also being conducted to evaluate the liquefaction capacity of… Bontang A further station than those already included in the North Hub POD, potentially enabling the reactivation of up to two additional LNG trains currently out of service. The Geliga‑1 discovery is located in the Ganal PSC, which is operated by Eni with an 82% stake, with Sinopec holding the remaining 18% stake.

Ganal PSC is included in a portfolio of 19 regions, including 14 in Indonesia and 5 in Malaysia, which will be transferred to… Unidirectionalthe Jointly controlled by Eni-Petronas It was announced in November 2025. The new company will combine assets, technical know-how and financial capacity to support growth and strengthen its presence in Southeast Asia.

The company’s business plan includes developing approximately 3 billion barrels of oil equivalent from discovered resources, along with unlocking significant exploration potential. Transition and setup activities are seen to be progressing smoothly, with no critical issues expected at this time.

Closing of the deal remains certain for the second quarter of 2026. The third-party valuation of the 10% stake in Eni Indonesia’s portfolio held from the Searah deal is currently underway and is expected to be completed in 2026. The Geliga discovery is interpreted as adding to the value of this sale.

Eni is actively increasing its oil and gas arsenal around the world, as evidenced by the latest reports Natural gas discovery Off the coast of Egypt.
