The International Tank Container Organization today published its 2026 Global Tank Container Fleet Survey, revealing that the global tank container fleet reached 899,044 units as of January 1, 2026, representing a 1.93% increase over the previous year.
The latest report highlights a marked slowdown in fleet growth, after a decade of continuous expansion that has averaged a compound annual average of around 8%. The moderation reflects a challenging global economic environment and ongoing geopolitical turmoil impacting the chemicals and logistics sectors.
The survey provides important insights for manufacturers, operators, lessors, investors and service providers across the tank container supply chain.
According to the report, the slower growth trend observed in 2025 continued into 2026, confirming expectations that the market will adapt after the rapid expansion caused by pandemic-era supply chain disruptions. However, ITCO notes that the adjustment was more pronounced than initially expected.
Commenting on the trends highlighted by the survey, ITCO Chairman William Lee Pemberton notes: “While the global fleet has continued to grow, the rate of expansion has clearly slowed. This reflects the reality of a market facing significant economic and geopolitical headwinds, particularly in the chemical industry.”
“The last 12 to 18 months have been particularly challenging in Europe, where rising energy and feedstock costs, regulatory pressures and competition from low-cost imports have taken their toll,” he adds. “These factors are inevitably impacting investment decisions and fleet growth.”
The report also points to broader global influences, including the ongoing war in Ukraine, trade tensions, instability in the Middle East, and weak global GDP growth, all of which have contributed to a more cautious market environment.
Despite these challenges, ITCO emphasizes the continued flexibility and strategic importance of tank containers. Their flexibility as intermodal transport units and temporary storage solutions positions them well in an increasingly volatile global supply chain landscape.
“Tank containers continue to prove their value across shipping, intermodal and warehousing applications,” Pemberton assures me. “As supply chains evolve – and potentially shift towards more regional or ‘local-for-local’ models – we see continued opportunities for tank containers, particularly in serving hard-to-reach markets.”
