BP and ExxonMobil intend to increase production at the American oil and gas platform in the Gulf


UK-based energy giant BP and its US-based partner ExxonMobil have embarked on a quest to boost production at an offshore platform in the Gulf of America (US Gulf of Mexico), thanks to the development of a subsea pump.

BP and ExxonMobil have announced their final investment decision (FID). The Thunder Horse subsea pump, which is described as a strategic investment to support and enhance production from BP’s largest oil and gas production platform, is seen as representing the first application of a proven approach that the operator expects to extend to subsequent developments such as Cascade and Tiber.

These two projects are expected to begin production in 2029 and 2030, respectively. BP claims the subsea pump, which is seen as cost-effective by design, is expected to provide production comparable to that of drilling up to two new wells, while reducing pressure across existing wells and helping put Thunder Horse on production for longer.

The operator explained: “Technology plays a critical role in helping our team in America’s Gulf maximize production and unlock greater value from existing offshore production platforms. Subsea pumps are one example, supporting sustainable, increased production throughout the life of our fields.

“A subsea pump is installed on the seabed as part of the subsea production system. It enhances the flow of oil and gas from the reservoir, which helps move it more efficiently from the well to the production platform. It helps capture more of the available oil and gas underground, and sometimes can keep the platform producing longer.”
