The Quebec Innovative Materials Corporation (QIMC) appeared before a parliamentary committee of the National Assembly of Quebec to present its hydrogen development efforts in support of Bill 17 – a law intended in part to create a legal framework for natural hydrogen.
“We are deeply honored to have been invited to appear before this important parliamentary committee as an industry leader,” said John Karagianidis, CEO of QIMC. “This invitation reflects the confidence that the Quebec government places in our expertise in natural hydrogen.”
The company said it welcomed the progress made on the bill, calling it an “important step” toward establishing a hydrogen development project in the province.
During question period, liberal MPs asked whether natural hydrogen exploration could compete with farmers for water, and pointed out what they saw as potential weaknesses in the protections in Bill 17.
In a press release, QIC thanked the provincial government for the invitation and members of the opposition for their “thoughtful and constructive questions.”
QIMC currently holds a 5,000-meter drilling permit in the Abitibi-Témiscamingue area in Quebec. The company says it has already identified its geological targets and can begin drilling once the regulatory framework is in place.
Bill 17 is currently at the parliamentary committee stage in the Quebec National Assembly, and no timeline has been set for passage or royal assent.
