South Korea’s Samsung Heavy Industries (SHI) held a launching ceremony for a floating liquefied natural gas (FLNG) unit intended for deployment in the traditional lands of the Haisla nation, on Canada’s west coast.

Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard has confirmed the launch ceremony for the $4 billion project Cedar LNG FLNG Megúgu ProjectWhich will be deployed off the coast of Kitimat, British Columbia, Canada. The South Korean shipyard intends to conduct fabrication and installation of the upper module, along with an LNG cargo tank range to complete commissioning and delivery of the facility in the first half of 2028.
With a hull 2.5 times the size of a football field and a weight of approximately 50,000 tons, Cedar FLNG is an onshore facility that will liquefy, store and offload natural gas supplied from land. The unit will Clean running HydroElectricity from the British Columbia grid and low-carbon liquefied natural gas production that has the potential to replace high-emissions forms of energy in Asia.
The Cedar LNG project, which is majority owned by the Haisla Nation, in partnership with Pembina Pipeline Corporation, will be powered by renewable electricity, making it one of the lowest carbon-intensive LNG facilities in the world.

Samsung Heavy Industries’ Geoje shipyard is currently building three large FLNG units: Canada’s Cedar FLNG, Malaysia’s Petronas’ ZLNG, and Eni’s Coral North FLNG.
