An $8.25 million class action settlement is on the table amid allegations that tech giant Google violated the privacy rights of minors.
In a 2023 class action lawsuit filed in the Northern District of California, plaintiffs Allegedly Google LLC and AdMob Google Inc. They collect, use and disclose personal information from children under the age of 13 using Google Play applications without parental consent.
Plaintiffs also allege that Google collected and used data for targeted behavioral advertising in violation of state and federal law, including the Children’s Online Privacy Protection Act (COPPA).
Class Members include U.S. residents who are under the age of 13 at any time between April 1, 2015 and attendees who have downloaded or used an application from Google Play.
$8.25 million will be settled cover The cost of attorneys’ fees, settlement administration, class representative service awards and other expenses. The remaining funds will be distributed to eligible claimants on a pro rata basis.
Google denies these accusations and any violations and says it decided to settle to avoid the costs and risks of trial.
Claims must be submitted online or by mail by September 14, with an opt-out or objection deadline of August 4. The final approval hearing is scheduled for September 24.
