Komatsu The German Mining Division has announced the global launch of the PC9000-12, the largest and most innovative hydraulic mining excavator in the company’s portfolio. Having proven successful in the Canadian market, the massive machine is now available worldwide through Komatsu’s global dealer network.
The PC9000-12 represents the next evolution in Komatsu’s surface mining portfolio, designed to help mining operations achieve higher productivity, improved efficiency and lower cost per ton while delivering the power, performance and reliability customers expect.
Flexible design meets tough mining conditions
Mining companies can configure the PC9000-12 with Tier 4 diesel, unregulated diesel or electric drive options. This flexibility allows operations to adapt equipment selection to regulatory requirements and site-specific conditions across different regions. As the largest model in Komatsu’s PC series, the excavator offers the highest bucket capacity, longest reach and strongest digging power in the range. These capabilities translate into improved cycle times, increased production, and reduced production costs for mining operations.
The PC9000-12 comes in front shovel and backhoe configurations, equipped with either a 46 cubic meter front shovel or a 49 cubic meter backhoe loader. Engineers have precisely optimized the machine to load Komatsu’s largest mining trucks ranging from 240 to 400 short tons in three to five times the capacity.
Impressive performance numbers
With a payload exceeding 80 tons per pass, the PC9000-12 can load a Komatsu 980E truck in just five passes within 150 seconds. Under ideal conditions, this performance translates to production rates of approximately 8,000 tons per hour. The excavator handles efficient loading on both sides and integrates with Komatsu’s FrontRunner autonomous conveyor system, positioning it for future-ready mining sites. Operators benefit from a spacious, ergonomically optimized cabin and advanced monitoring systems that reduce fatigue, improve visibility and enhance situational awareness throughout every shift.
The global launch follows the Canadian success
“The PC9000-12 represents the next evolution in our product lineup, setting a new standard for global opencast mining operations,” said Peter Buhls, Vice President of Sales and Service.
“With its versatile configurations – including front shovel and backhoe, plus diesel and electric engine options – we can efficiently service all major mining operations around the world. The PC9000-12 delivers the power, performance and reliability our customers expect, while supporting higher productivity, lower emissions per ton and seamless integration with autonomous conveyor systems.”
Komatsu delivered the inaugural PC9000-12 in May 2025 to an oil sands operation in Canada. SMS Equipment served as the launch partner for the Canadian market, supporting the successful introduction and commissioning of the first machines in collaboration with Komatsu and the customer.
