Italian company Prysmian has secured a framework agreement with the Greek electricity grid operator, the Independent Power Transmission Operator (IPTO), worth approximately €910 million to develop electrical connections for the Dodecanese Islands and the northern Aegean Sea in Greece.
Prysmian will design, manufacture and install submarine and onshore cables for “Group B” comprising seven projects totaling more than 900 km of high-voltage alternating current (HVAC) cables, with final delivery expected in 2033.
The Italian company, which has reached water depths of up to 1,150 metres, said it will achieve a new depth record for fixed three-core HVAC cables.
The signing of the Agreement is subject to customary legal conditions and regulatory approvals, and its implementation is conditional upon the issuance of a Proceed Notice by the Customer.
“This is a step forward for Greece. We know from our previous experience in the country how important and welcome improved electrical infrastructure is for residents of island communities,” He said Raoul GilEVP transmission in Prysmian.
“We will use our assets – from design, fabrication, surveying and installation, including our leading deepwater vessels – to deliver these vital upgrades, and we are excited to see the positive impact our hard work will have on thousands of residents and visitors to these islands in the very near future.”
Prysmian has previously worked with IPTO to deliver several projects, including interconnection of the Cyclades Islands (Evia, Andros, Tinos, Syros Lavrio), Crete Attica In Crete-Peloponnese, where the company set the previous HVAC depth record, installing cables approximately 960 meters below sea level.
