Orient Cable (NBO) has installed the submarine cable for China Three Gorges (CTG)’s 16MW floating wind demonstration platform, said to be the world’s largest single-unit floating wind turbine.
NBO says this is the first dynamic 66kV floating wind cable installed in China. The company’s scope of work included the design, supply and installation of the dynamic cable, which is designed to withstand extreme wave heights of more than 20 meters and support 25 years of service in harsh marine environments, according to the National Bank of Oman.
CTG installed the 16MW Sanxia Linghang (Three Corridor Pilot) floating wind platform on May 2 At a site located more than 70 kilometers off Yangjiang, Guangdong Province, where the water depth exceeds 50 metres.
The platform consists of a 16 MW turbine, a semi-submersible floating foundation and a new mooring system, and is approximately 80.8 meters long and 91 meters wide, with a displacement of 24,100 tons. The turbine features a rotor diameter of 252 metres, with a sweep area equivalent to about seven football fields and a blade tip height of more than 270 metres.
Designed for extreme marine conditions, the Sanxia Linghang is designed to withstand wave heights of more than 20 meters and wind speeds of up to 73 meters per second, CTG says.
