A former First Commonwealth Bank manager has been accused of stealing more than $31,000 from deceased customers’ accounts in just one month.
Jerry Maines, who worked at the bank branch in Westmoreland Dairy Township, Pennsylvania, allegedly began the robbery on April 1 after withdrawing more than $4,500 in cash from a dead customer’s account. Reports CBS Pittsburgh.
Two days later, authorities allege Maines forged a teller’s signature and took more than $1,300 from another deceased customer’s account. Police say surveillance footage shows Maines then deposited the money into her account at First Commonwealth.
Authorities also allege that on April 8, Maines forged the signature of another bank employee to drain approximately $2,200 while stealing approximately $5,000 from another account. Two weeks later, Maines allegedly received $10,000. On May 1, Maines allegedly withdrew $9,000 after forging the signature of an employee who was not at the bank’s headquarters at the time.
Police say the bank reported the suspicious transactions at the end of May, after conducting an internal investigation. Maines, who no longer works at First Commonwealth Bank, faces multiple charges, including theft and forgery.
The bank says all affected accounts have been paid in full.
First Commonwealth Bank is the nation’s 126th-largest bank, with total assets of $12.311 billion, according to First Commonwealth Bank. Federal Reserve.
