Erez releases new hopper flow guidelines

In mineral processing, vibrating feeder systems are used to move materials, such as fine powders and heavy rocks, from the hopper for delivery to downstream equipment. Improving these systems is a key priority for companies looking to improve plant efficiency. Eriez, a company specializing in separation technology, has published a paper arguing that this flow often gets stuck not because of the feeder itself, but because of poorly designed hopper transitions.

“Even the most advanced vibrating feeder cannot perform to specifications if the material is not fed correctly,” said Clay Odana, study author and global product manager at Erez.

Paper titled Optimizing Hopper Transitions: Design guidelines for maximum hopper-to-feeder performancehighlights design variables that can be adjusted according to individual materials. These include throat opening dimensions, gate height, hopper wall angles, and structural clearances.

The sheet also contains illustrative examples, design proportions and installation guides. The document is designed to help engineers and operators identify and resolve feeding problems before they lead to a loss of productivity, Erez said.

“These guidelines are based on decades of applied experience and are designed to be applied directly in the field,” Udana concluded.
