Floating hydrogen plants move closer to reality by validating ammonia cracking technology


Höegh Evi, the Norwegian owner and operator of liquefied natural gas (LNG) carriers and floating storage and reconversion units (FSRUs), and Nord Gas Solutions, formerly known as Wartsila Gas Solutions, have concluded performance testing of ammonia-to-hydrogen cracking technology for floating hydrogen terminals in Norway.

Höegh Evi and Nord Gas Solutions have completed performance testing for the conversion of ammonia to hydrogen Crushing technology in Sustainable energy Pilot plant in Stord, Norway. The development was financially supported by the Norwegian Green Platform programme.

The project consortium includes Höegh Evi; North Gas Solutions; BASF’s contribution to the supply of catalysts; University of South-Eastern Norway; sustainable energy; and the Norwegian Institute of Energy Technology (IFE).

“This achievement also confirms the case for floating plants as a fast and competitive path to large-scale hydrogen implementation. We look forward to validating these results further in long-term testing.”

The pilot cracker is said to have demonstrated high performance across a range of important parameters, including conversion rate, efficiency, hydrogen production and operational flexibility.

Through a single, stable process, the unit converts ammonia into hydrogen at a purity level exceeding 99.5%. Thanks to a modular design optimized for adaptability and scalability, the crusher can be deployed in both floating plants and land-based applications.

The results confirm both the efficiency and operational robustness of our technology, supporting its readiness for deployment in industrial-scale applications.”

Höegh Evi is currently developing cost-competitive floating plants with the capacity to deliver hydrogen on an industrial scale of up to 200,000 tons per year.

As global hydrogen production capacity grows, European ports are said to be emerging as a vital gateway where import terminals can receive ammonia and convert it into hydrogen, providing clean, competitive and reliable energy.

The Norwegian company and its partners are developing several offshore plants across Europe, where this highly efficient ammonia cracking technology is scheduled to be deployed on a floating or shore-based plant.
