
In metal processing, cyclones use centrifugal force to separate coarse and fine particles. multitek, One Johannesburg-based mineral processing and mining company describes this design as “deceptively simple,” making it easy to minimize the financial losses that can result from poor separation efficiency.
To improve operators’ understanding, Multotec will be displaying its glass cyclone at Electra Mining Africa 2026. The transparent cyclone is designed to allow visitors to see the grading process in real time. “By making the classification process visible, the glass cyclone demonstrates the important relationship between cyclone design, corrosion management and overall plant performance,” the company said in a press release.
Poorly performing cyclones directly impact downstream mineral recovery, said Ernest Becker, operations specialist at Multotec. “Many operators assume that a cyclone is operating properly simply because the material is discharged from both overflow and underflow. In fact, this can mask poor classification efficiency, negatively impacting upstream and downstream plant performance,” he said.
Bekker recommends performing inspections quarterly or twice yearly to identify early signs of component deterioration. Sensors that measure flow, pressure, vibration and vacuum conditions can also help with efficiency. “These systems monitor key operating parameters and alert operators when performance moves outside the hurricane’s optimal operating range,” he added.
