Eni and TotalEnergies have taken a final investment decision (FID) for the development of the Cronos field, the first gas development project in Cyprus, expected to start production in 2028.
Operated by Eni and located in deep offshore waters approximately 185 kilometers southwest of the coast of Cyprus, in offshore Block 6, Kronos was discovered in 2022 and evaluated in 2024.
The field will be developed through four subsea wells and will partly rely on existing facilities in Egypt. The gas will be transported via an undersea pipeline from Cyprus to Egypt, where it will be processed at the Zohr facilities and then liquefied at the Damietta LNG terminal before being exported to global markets, primarily Europe.
Production is expected to begin in 2028, with a plateau of about 500 million cubic feet per day, equivalent to about 2.8 million tons of LNG per year, 50% of which will be marketed by Total Energies.

“By building on existing gas processing capabilities, this project is in line with our strategy of prioritizing low-cost, low-emission projects. Cronos will also contribute to the growth of TotalEnergies’ LNG portfolio which is expected to reach 60 million tons per year by 2030.”
By marketing 50% of LNG volumes, equivalent to 1.4 million tons per year, Eni said it will increase its contracted LNG portfolio, supporting its ambition to exceed 20 million tons per year by 2030.
with Host government agreement The main commercial and contractual agreements necessary to develop the project were signed in February 2025, setting out the terms for the use of the offshore facilities of the Zohr field, the transit of gas through Egypt, the liquefaction at Damietta for LNG, and the sale of the gas as LNG.
In Cyprus, Eni and Total Energia are also partners in blocks 7, 8 and 11. Total Energies operates Blocks 7 and 11, while Eni operates Block 8, where Total Energies owns 40%.
