UK-based energy giant BP has begun production with an expansion project for a field in the US Gulf (Gulf of Mexico) discovered in 1998.

BP today, July 30, announced the start-up of the Atlantis Major Facilities Expansion Project, which adds two new subsea water injection wells to the Atlantis field to help increase the pressure of the target reservoirs, unlock additional barrels and extend the production life of the assets.
According to the company, the project was delivered ahead of schedule and under budget and adds approximately 10,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day to BP’s total average annual production, with about 5,000 barrels of oil equivalent per day.
BP is the operator of Atlantis with a 56% operating interest, and the co-owner is Woodside Energy with a remaining 44% operating interest. The field is located about 150 miles south of New Orleans.
“Atlantis has been a pillar of our business in the Gulf region for nearly two decades, and this expansion proves that there is still more value to be created.” He said Andy KriegerBP’s senior vice president for the US Gulf region and Canada. “We are extending the life of a great asset while supporting jobs and investment in the region – all while making the most of the infrastructure that already exists.”
BP recently sanctioned two new production platforms, Cascade and Tipper, which together are expected to add 160,000 barrels per day of new oil production capacity in the US offshore region by the end of 2030.
At the end of 2025, the company will be headquartered in the United Kingdom First oil delivery Two months before the scheduled implementation of a two-well expansion project at the Atlantis 1 drilling center in the American Gulf, which represents the seventh major project to start operations.
These projects are part of BP’s plan to deliver ten major startup projects globally by 2027.
