While the recently announced US-Iran ceasefire is still too early to bear measurable results yet, our latest AIS-derived data shows early signs of a rebound in ship activity in the Strait of Hormuz – starting on April 1st.
From 1-7 April, we recorded 84 confirmed transits across the dry bulk, tanker and gas tanker sectors, an increase of 75% from 48 transits in the previous week (25-31 March).
As of this morning, a total of 1,441 merchant ships have been tracked through both sides of the strait, of which 959 are currently stationed west of Hormuz within the Gulf. This is lower than the peak of 1,061 ships recorded earlier in the disruption, but still represents a significant backlog.
Meanwhile, AIS turbulence remains high. About 43% of ships in the region are currently not transmitting or broadcasting unreliable signals, compared to a pre-disturbance baseline of about 17%.
