Hundreds of thousands of Americans have been warned about a data breach at financial services company Hightower Holding.
In a report sender To the Maine Attorney General, the Chicago-based company says user credentials were compromised, leading to unauthorized access to its computer network in early January.
An investigation later determined that specific files had been downloaded without authorization that contained personally identifiable and private information, including names, Social Security numbers, and driver’s license numbers.
The filing shows 131,483 people were affected by the accident, including 1,557 Maine residents.
The breach was discovered on March 12, 2026 and affected individuals were notified on March 23, 2026.
According to the statement, Hightower identified a compromised user account that enabled unauthorized access to its network around January 9, 2026, and a subsequent investigation found that files were improperly downloaded between January 8 and January 9, 2026.
