Workplace safety north has revealed the keynote speakers at its annual Mining Health and Safety Conference, which will be held April 15-16 at Sudbury’s Holiday Inn. Tickets for the event have sold out and more than 250 participants are expected to attend. The conference has the theme “Shaping Safety in the Age of Critical Metals” and will include presentations, technical sessions, a trade show, networking events and an awards ceremony.
The sell-out status reflects the industry’s strong interest in addressing the safety challenges of this expanding sector. Sudbury’s hosting of the event aligns with the city’s position as a major mining centre, providing attendees with access to local expertise and networking opportunities within Ontario’s mining community.
Workplace Safety North operates as a not-for-profit health and safety association funded by the provincial government. Based in North Bay, the organization provides certified health and safety training and services specifically for the mining and forest products industries. The conference brings together mining professionals to promote safety and sustainability as the sector responds to growing demand for critical minerals essential for clean energy technologies and electric vehicle production.
For 28 years, this gathering has attracted around 300 participants annually from the global mining industry to share knowledge about sector-specific risks and explore innovations.
Industry leaders are addressing evolving safety challenges
WSN President and CEO Mike Barnett emphasized the conference’s importance as Ontario’s mining sector expands to meet growing demand for minerals. He noted that prioritizing compliance, risk management and safety culture becomes essential as the industry evolves, and the conference supports professionals by exchanging practical ideas and technical expertise needed to manage emerging risks and protect workers.
Alan James Moore, a Canadian registered safety professional with a background in stand-up comedy, will open the conference with a presentation on human and organizational performance in safety. Dan Comiskey, a former Canadian Football League All-Star and Gray Cup champion, will deliver the closing remarks on promoting a culture of leadership and safety.
The conference addresses critical mining challenges
This year’s sessions will explore the key challenges and emerging solutions shaping the future of mining. The agenda focuses on the high-risk risks of underground work, safety culture and management systems, environmental responsibility, workplace wellbeing and mental health. Additional topics include community partnerships and sustainable growth, workforce readiness and future skills development, as well as research and innovation. These areas reflect the industry’s need to achieve a balance between increasing mineral production and enhancing safety standards and environmental stewardship.
