Silver Vizsla Nine employees have been found dead following an accident at its operations in Concordia, Sinaloa state, while one worker remains missing, the company confirmed on Tuesday. Vizsla Silver workers were kidnapped on January 23 from Concordia in Mexico’s northwestern state of Sinaloa.
The Toronto-listed mining company continues to work with local authorities in their investigation and maintains contact with the family of the missing worker. The company did not reveal details about the cause of death or the time of the accident.
“This is a devastating outcome, and our heartfelt condolences go out to all the families affected,” said Michael Kuhnert, President and CEO of Vizsla Silver. “We stand by them with continued support as we grieve with our colleagues and friends.”
Vizsla Silver operates the Panuco silver and gold project in the state of Sinaloa, located in northwestern Mexico. The company has been developing the property since its acquisition in 2019, and began commercial production earlier this year.
Mining operations in Mexico face various safety challenges, with the country reporting dozens of mining-related deaths annually. The Mexican government has increased safety inspections and regulations in recent years following several high-profile mining accidents.
“We will always carry this loss with us,” Kuhnert added. “We will honor our colleagues through the work we do every day and our ongoing commitment to their families, our Sinaloa community, and the values that define us.”
Vizsla Silver plans to provide an operational update once the investigation progresses.
According to the statement, the families of the deceased workers are receiving support from the company during this difficult period.
