The R 9100 G8 offers 30% better fuel efficiency than the G6

mining libre It has launched the R 9100 Generation 8 (G8), a 100-ton class excavator now available to purchase in both backhoe and front shovel configurations. The company said series production will begin in the second quarter of 2026 for the backhoe and follow in the third quarter of 2026 for the front shovel.

The R 9100 G8 primary series was tested at PT Madhani Talatah Nusantara’s Tanjung Enim mine in South Sumatra from September 2024 to December 2025, where it averaged 411 operating hours per month and reached 92% availability, exceeding site expectations. During the real-time production study in September 2025, the machine achieved a production rate of 771.2 billion cubic meters (1,589 tons) per hour with a fuel consumption of 85.7 liters per hour, equivalent to 9 billion cubic meters per liter.

The R 9100 G8 consumes 20% less fuel than the R 9100 Generation 6 (G6) and delivers 30% higher fuel efficiency through its energy-efficient Liebherr engine and hydraulic drive system, Liebherr said. The company estimates that operators can save up to 100,000 liters of fuel per year compared to the previous generation.

The G8 retains proven elements like the D9512 engine with an improved fuel combustion configuration, the same bucket capacities, and a FOPS-certified pressurized cab. Generation 8 upgrades include a redesigned electro-hydraulic control system for smoother operation, an improved attachment and hydraulic circuit to reduce pressure loss and improve cycle times, integrated IMUs for cylinder damping, a redesigned undercarriage with lifetime sealed belt drives, and extended grease change intervals to a minimum of 250 operating hours.

Liebherr has also equipped the R 9100 G8 for digital integration. The excavator supports the IoMine suite — assistance systems, Skyview 360° vision, bucket fill assistant, data visualization, and data services — allowing operators to connect equipment, capture machine and process data, and turn field information into actionable decisions.

The company said field verification of the pre-series for the Tier 4/Stage V version is scheduled to begin in 2027. Liebherr Mining, part of the Liebherr Group, has designed and supported mining equipment for more than 50 years and continues to develop low and zero emissions options to support customers’ decarbonization efforts.
