Wells Fargo Customer Loses $19,460 in Walmart Text Scam: Report

A Wells Fargo customer lost thousands of dollars to scammers posing as the bank’s fraud investigators.

It all started when the unnamed woman received a text message in January 2025 about a fraudulent purchase attempt at Walmart. Reports Coral Springs News.

The customer denied the purchase, but then received a phone call from the same number from someone who identified himself as a Wells Fargo investigator.

He told her that there was a federal investigation into fraud against bank managers and tellers, and that she needed to take action to protect the money in her account.

The alleged Wells Fargo investigator told her to go to her local branch and withdraw the money in her account and place it in another Wells Fargo account to protect her funds. The scammer gave the woman a debit card number to put money on.

The victim went to her local Wells Fargo branch and deposited $19,460 into her debit card account.

Once the transaction was completed, the victim says she had a “weird feeling” and returned to her branch to speak to staff. Staff told her there was no federal investigation, and she realized she had been scammed.

Local law enforcement was able to arrest one of the alleged scammers, 26-year-old Samara Comrie, who is now facing a grand theft charge. Investigators say they discovered that the debit card the victim transferred money to was in Comrie’s name.
