Alaska-based Sitcana is set to deploy a new tidal turbine prototype at the Marine Renewable Energy Cooperative (MRECo) Bourne Tidal Test Site (BTTS) in Massachusetts, US.

At BTTS, located in the Cape Cod Canal, the turbines will operate in strong tidal currents while engineers evaluate their performance, reliability and durability in real ocean conditions, marking a step forward toward commercial deployment.
According to Setkana, the technology uses smaller modular modules that are integrated into larger arrays, allowing systems to scale without extensive infrastructure or specialized installation equipment.
“Our goal is to facilitate the construction, deployment and maintenance of marine energy in remote areas.” He said Lance McMullanfounder and CEO of Setcana. “BTTS is one of the few places where we can evaluate our entire system in one place. In addition to measuring power performance, we will be able to monitor operation in a real marine environment and better understand interactions with wildlife. This testing is critical as we move toward commercial deployments.”
MRECo’s recent upgrades to the BTTS system include enhanced data systems, improved testing infrastructure, expanded model deployment capabilities, and preparations for future grid-connected tidal turbine testing, thanks to support from the Massachusetts Clean Energy Center’s (MassCEC) Ocean Innovation Network.
