Association of Mineral Exploration (AME) He criticized British Columbia Premier David Eby’s announcement that the provincial government will not introduce amendments to the Declaration of the Rights of Indigenous Peoples Act (DRIPA) during the spring 2026 legislative session.
AME President and CEO Todd Stone expressed his disappointment with the Prime Minister’s recent announcement. “Our members are extremely disappointed by the Premier’s announcement. AME has been supportive of the Premier’s ambitions for British Columbia to become an important mineral hub, but the decision to raise this issue six months in the future will only serve to frustrate those ambitions. This is a critical time for our province’s mineral explorers who need to focus on raising funds and getting to work searching for the minerals the world needs for tomorrow. All of this is becoming more difficult as uncertainty continues to grow due to indecision and paralysis in the province.”
AME reiterated the need for timely and substantial adjustments to restore certainty to British Columbia’s economic outlook. The organization noted the Prime Minister’s commitment in December 2025 to fundamentally amend the legislation during the spring period.
In an official statement, AME officials noted that Premier Eby said in December: “But to be frank, it is critical that British Columbians remain in control of this process, through their elected representatives, not the courts… There is a lot riding on it in terms of the future prosperity and certainty of our province. So, I think it is more or less likely that we will move forward with amendments to provide clarity around what was clearly intended when we introduced this legislation, and it appears that “The court has some confusion about that.”
The government announced an engagement process with First Nations. AME encourages the District to commit to concurrent engagement with the public and industry. The organization stressed that any DRIPA process needs consistency and transparency.
Stone noted that collaborative approaches yield better results and that the mineral exploration sector requires all stakeholders to participate in finding solutions that work for everyone involved. The organization plans to continue engaging with members and discussing these developments as they arise.
