An international crackdown takes down nine cryptocurrency investment scam centers, leading to the arrest of 276 individuals


Law enforcement authorities have arrested at least 276 individuals following an international crackdown targeting scam centers involved in cryptocurrency investment fraud schemes.

In a statement by the US Department of Justice He says Cooperation between the FBI, Dubai Police Department, and the Chinese Ministry of Public Security led to the dismantling of at least nine cryptocurrency scam centers targeting Americans.

Among those detained is Burmese national Thet Min Nyi, who is believed to be a director and employee of Ko Thet, which allegedly runs several fraud centres. Coordinated efforts also led to the arrest of Indonesian nationals Weliang Awang, Andreas Chandra and Lisa Mariam. All four were charged with federal fraud and money laundering in San Diego on April 29.

The Justice Department says the defendants worked and recruited others to work for Ko Thet, Sanduo Group and Giant Company allegedly linked to cryptocurrency scam centers engaged in pig slaughter, a type of fraud that involves gaining the trust of victims before convincing them to use their money in fictitious investments.

Assistant Public Prosecutor A. Tyson Duva from the Criminal Division of the Ministry of Justice:

“Fraudsters who target Americans from abroad cannot get away with it, no matter where in the world they live. The charges and arrests announced today reflect an international consensus that scam centers are not welcome everywhere and must be rooted out. Scam organizers and scammers who defraud Americans and others will face justice in American courts and in courts around the world.”
