Assembly of the PTO module for the wave energy module destined for BiMEP begins ahead of its deployment in October


The first of three power take-off (PTO) modules for Carnegie Clean Energy’s (WEC) CETO wave energy converter has been delivered to SKF’s manufacturing facility in Germany, where final PTO assembly work is being performed, ahead of ocean deployment scheduled for October.

CETO is a fully submerged point absorber type wave energy technology device. A buoy is submerged a few meters below the surface and moves with the ocean waves. This orbital motion powers the PTO system which converts this motion into electricity.

The unit will operate at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) for two years, collecting data to validate the CETO technology and enhance commercialization.

SKF’s assembly work involves integrating all PTO equipment into each of the three PTO modules, including generators, tensioners, shafts, couplings, bearings, seals and sensors, which essentially connect all the power generation equipment within the module.

The current PTO assembly work is a follow-up to the previously completed assembly of the Electrical Module (EM), which was carried out with SEI, a local supplier from the Basque Country. As the PTO assembly progresses, system testing will be performed to validate the connection between the EM and PTO modules in preparation for overseas deployment.

Carnegie plans a phased deployment and operation of the CETO unit, beginning with foundation deployment at the BiMEP pier next quarter. The first phase of ocean deployment is scheduled to take place in October, with subsequent deployment, operation and testing phases of the system gradually completing and moving on to optimization.

The company also announced that it is currently procuring specialist marine contractors to undertake the installation of foundations and mooring systems, connection to existing export cables and installation of the CETO unit.
