Mass rock movement has forced Agnico Eagle to temporarily halt operations at the Barnat pit in the Canadian Malartic complex in Quebec. In a press statement, she described the closure as a “precautionary measure.”
The movement occurred on July 1 along the north wall of the mine in an area the company said it had previously identified as having weaker geological structure.
Agnico Eagle reported no injuries, equipment damage, or environmental impact following the event.
She added that production in the second quarter of 2026 was not affected and gold yields of about 845,000 ounces would continue slightly ahead of plan. However, the company said it expects full-year production to be at the lower end of a previously disclosed range of 3.3 million to 3.5 million ounces of gold.
For 2027 and 2028, Agnico Eagle said gold production is expected to decline to about 150,000 ounces per year. The company said development of its Odyssey mine was not affected, keeping Canada’s Malartic complex on track to produce 1 million ounces in the early 2030s.
