Drydocks World appoints Svanehoj to the task of converting LNGC to FSU


Denmark-headquartered LNG marine pump and safety systems specialist Svanehoj has received an order to supply LNG Carrier (LNGC) LTD measurement systems to a floating storage unit (FSU) (LNGC-to-FSU) refurbishment, strengthening its position in offshore LNG infrastructure as demand for LNG vessel conversions grows.

Svanehoj has signed a contract with Drydocks World Dubai to supply LTD measuring systems for transformation Follower Bayelsa LNG Ship in NFL Cap Lopez To support new energy infrastructure and changing operational needs.

The project represents an important step in the LNG conversion market for the Danish company, as it is a strategically important segment for its limited measurement system technology, and supports growth in offshore LNG infrastructure.

Fabrice VandewalleLNG/Cryogenic Sales Manager, Svanehoj, France commented: “This is the first time we have supplied our LTD measurement systems for an LNGC to FSU conversion, and the project supports our ambition to strengthen Svanehoj’s presence in offshore LNG infrastructure.

“In conversion projects, existing equipment is often no longer sufficient for the vessel’s new role. Advanced monitoring and safety systems are essential for long-term safe and reliable offshore operation.”

The comprehensive conversion project involves extensive modifications to the vessels, from steel fabrication and pipe installation to new processing units, tank painting and life extension works under Lloyd’s Register classification. As part of the conversion, Svanehoj will supply four LTD measuring systems to replace the existing onboard floating level gauges.

The upgraded solution enables automatic and continuous measurement of LNG density and gas composition in storage tanks. Real-time data will be fed into rollover prediction software designed to detect stratification and identify potential rollover events before they occur, supporting operational efficiency and safety on board.

With completion tentatively planned for the third quarter of 2027, the Cap Lopez FSU project is said to reflect a broader industry trend towards converting existing LNG assets into floating offshore infrastructure capable of supporting gas liquefaction, storage and export operations.

“As offshore energy projects seek to extend the life and functionality of existing assets, LNG conversions to fossil fuel storage are becoming an increasingly attractive alternative for new builds.” Svanehoj confirmed.

The project is being undertaken for Dixstone Lower Gulf FZCO as part of a larger LNG development project to expand offshore gas infrastructure in Gabon. The new FSU will support offshore gas storage and export.

The broader project is expected to reduce gas flaring while increasing the country’s production capacity by about 105 million standard cubic feet per day.
