Dutch Fugro has been selected to provide integrated marine surveying and inspection services for the Northern Endurance Partnership (NEP), the UK’s first marine carbon capture and storage (CCS) project.

It is developed about 75 kilometers east of Flamborough Head NEP project The project will include an onshore CO2 collection network, compression facilities and a 145km offshore pipeline connected to subsea injection facilities in the salty Endurance aquifer located approximately 1,000m below the North Sea floor.
The contract was awarded by Saipem, which is leading the engineering, procurement, construction and installation (EPCI) work for the offshore pipeline and associated infrastructure for NEP, a combined joint venture between BP, Equinor and TotalEnergies.
Fugro will conduct nearshore and offshore surveys and inspections to support pipeline installation, from onshore access to connection to existing offshore infrastructure. The near-shore works will focus on pre-surveys from the tunnel exit, which extends several kilometers offshore, along with monitoring the installation while the pipeline is being towed out to sea to ensure it is positioned as designed and to identify any unexpected seabed changes early.
Offshore, the company will provide surveys, installation and verification support along the pipeline route, including third-party pipelines and cable crossings.
“As the UK’s first major carbon capture and storage project, NEP’s work represents an important milestone in the energy transition, and we are delighted to be part of it.” He said Mike DuncanDirector, Marine Asset Safety, Europe and Africa at Fugro. “By working closely with Saipem across nearshore and offshore environments, from early surveys through installation, we support informed decision-making that helps Saipem manage risk across a technically complex route.”
Storage is expected to begin on site in 2028, making it the first operational carbon capture and storage project in the UK. The initial phase is expected to store up to 100 million tons of carbon dioxide in the Endurance aquifer over a period of 25 years.
