ABB, a Swiss-based electrical and automation technology provider, has been contracted to upgrade the automation and control systems on an offshore platform, operating about 100 kilometers north-east of Aberdeen in one of the UK’s largest North Sea oil fields.

ABB has been awarded a contract to modernize automation and control systems hawk platform By CNOOC Petroleum Europe, a subsidiary of CNOOC of China. This upgrade is expected to help ensure continued safe and reliable operations of the platform, which is deployed at the CNOOC-operated center. Falcon fieldis described as one of the highest producing fields in the UK. First oil was achieved in 2007.
Nicolas AlonsoABB’s Head of Energy Industries UK, Ireland and Azerbaijan commented: “This project reflects our long-standing partnership with CNOOC’s UK businesses and our shared commitment to safe and reliable operations. By upgrading existing automation systems, we are able to help support the UK’s energy security at a time of increasing demand.
Since the Swiss player will deliver a targeted update for the ABB Ability System 800xA distributed control system and the Safeguard 400 security system, the phased upgrade will allow essential updates to be introduced, while the platform remains operational, limiting downtime and reducing project risk.
The work will be managed by the company’s engineering team in Aberdeen, which also supports the Buzzard platform through an internal reference system used for testing and evaluation. By verifying upgrades onshore before deploying them offshore, the company believes it can help reduce risk, minimize disruption and maintain production continuity.
ABB recently completed several jobs, including a Upgrading payment systems Via a fleet of liquefied natural gas carriers (LNGCs) owned and operated by Cool Company (CoolCo).
