A Mississippi woman was arrested after authorities say she stole more than $18,000 from an elderly victim by forging stolen checks and cashing them for her own benefit.
Shelia Williams, a 70-year-old resident of Golden, Mississippi, faces multiple counts of forgery and theft, as well as one count of financial exploitation of an elderly person, following an investigation by the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office in Alabama. Reports NBC and ABC affiliate WTVA.
The case began in late June of this year after the elderly victim discovered approximately $18,206 missing from a bank account and reported the suspected theft to authorities.
According to investigators, Williams took five checks from the victim’s car without permission and forged the victim’s signature on them.
Authorities say Williams admitted to the scheme during an interview with investigators and told them she spent the stolen money on personal expenses.
The victim’s bank later paid the full amount taken, according to the sheriff’s office.
Authorities set bond at $20,000 for Williams.
Following the arrest, the Franklin County Sheriff’s Office urged the public to regularly monitor their bank accounts, keep checkbooks safe and report suspicious financial activity to banks or local law enforcement.
