MODEC and Eld are setting out to create a next-generation FPSO power system that will enable carbon capture


Japan’s MODEC and Eld Energy, a Norwegian fuel cell systems company, are pooling resources to activate a 1.2 MW carbon capture power system to commission zero-emission floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) units.

MODEC and Eld Energy have signed a Memorandum of Understanding (MOU) to develop a 1.2 MW power system integrated with carbon capture for application to FPSOs. The 1.2 MW unit is scheduled to be ground-tested in 2029, followed by a long-term demonstration.

While the Norwegian company will lead the design, procurement and construction of the power system based on solid oxide fuel cells (SOFCs), including the required testing and verification, the Japanese giant will develop the carbon capture and system integration facility for the FPSOs.

The memorandum of understanding was signed in Tokyo during the official visit made by His Royal Highness Prince Haakon, Crown Prince of Norway, to Japan, in the presence of the Norwegian Minister of Trade and Industry.

Eld Energy and MODEC have it cooperated Since 2025 on SOFC systems for marine use, with a gradual increase from 40 kW to 120 kW SOFC plus carbon capture trial. The new phase aims to demonstrate the scalability and integrated management of carbon in marine energy.
