Wolong Electric America Launched the Quantum 500 Frame medium voltage motor, expanding its quantum motor platform to serve demanding industrial environments. The company developed the new engine to replace the old design while providing higher power density and improved structural performance.
“The engine is suitable for a wide range of industrial applications, including pumps, compressors, mining equipment and petrochemical processing systems, and can be customized to meet specific application requirements while maintaining standard footprints and mounting interfaces,” the company stated.
Wolong Electric America manufactures GE and above NEMA brand motors for tough industrial environments. The Houston-based company inherited more than 130 years of legacy innovation from GE and serves industries from oil and gas to power generation and mining.
The engine targets multiple industries including oil and gas, petrochemical processing, mining, pumping systems and pressure equipment. Engineers matched tire sizes, ratings and footprints to current industry standards, creating a direct replacement option for existing installations.
Improved structure reduces vibration risks
Engineers redesigned the engine structure to achieve much greater rigidity. Quantum 500 shifts the motor’s natural frequency at least 15 percent out of the operating range, reducing the risk of resonance across various installation conditions. The team achieved this by increasing the rigidity of the frame and end shield, redesigning the stator-to-frame interface, and switching from a basic one-piece construction to a multi-plate monolithic design that improves support and vibration control.
Additional improvements include expanding the shaft diameter from 5.23 inches to 6.8 inches and reducing the bearing center distances. These changes increase shaft rigidity and help the motor perform reliably on rigid bases, flexible sleds, and other mounting configurations common in API-affected environments.
Field configurable features simplify installation
The Quantum 500 is fully bi-directional and allows operators to change the direction of the channel box in the field from F1 to F2 without having to rework in the shop, reducing downtime and simplifying maintenance. Select frame sizes include deep flange designs that support cantilever installation, enabling use in screw and reciprocating compressor applications where footless drive configurations are necessary.
The motor operates at medium voltages less than 7 kV and comes in WPI and WPII enclosures across a wide horsepower range and multi-pole configurations. Engineers designed bearing systems to meet industry guidelines, with a calculated bearing life exceeding 100,000 hours. The motor insulation system supports an expected service life of up to 30 years under normal operating conditions.
