Oceaneering has performed the first trial operation of a remotely operated vehicle (ROV) on an offshore drilling rig off the coast of Brazil from its Onshore Remote Operations Center (OROC), for Brazilian oil and gas giant Petrobras.

The company’s Subsea Robotics segment and Brazilian company Marine Production Systems do Brasil LTDA (MPS) piloted an ROV located on an OROC drilling rig in Macaé to support Petrobras’ offshore activities.

Following the opening of Macaé OROC, Ocean Sports in February 2024 Perform ROV operations remotely for Petrobras by controlling an ROV operating from a ship off the coast of Brazil.
“This first test represents an important step forward in the expansion of remote operations at Petrobras, demonstrating the maturity of the technology and the potential for more integrated operational models between offshore assets and onshore support centres.” He said Daniel RigoviDirector of Integrated Safety and Remote Well Operations at Petrobras.
“In my view, such solutions provide tangible benefits, especially in reducing employee exposure to risks, reducing greenhouse gas emissions, and improving operational efficiency. They also expand the ability to support operations and contribute to greater accessibility and inclusion through remote working models.”
Oceaneering carried out its first land-based ROV operations in 2004 and established its first OROC in Stavanger, Norway, in 2015. Currently, in addition to Macaé, the company operates OROCs in Aberdeen, Scotland, and Morgan City, Louisiana.
