Brazilian state-controlled oil company Petrobras has placed a $427 million order with the Estaliro Rio Grande shipyard to build four medium-haul oil tankers to transport oil and petroleum products along the Brazilian coast.

The contract was signed by Petrobras Transporte (Transpetro) on June 18 for the MR1 class ships, each of which will have a gross tonnage of 40,000 tons and be able to operate on biofuels, such as ethanol, and in electrified ports.
The first ship is expected to be delivered within 33 months. All ships will be approximately 175 meters long and 30 meters wide, and will be able to transport products such as diesel, gasoline and fuel oil.
The order is part of the Mar Aberto program aimed at renewing and expanding Petrobras’ own fleet, with 16 coastal vessels planned by Transpetro under the initiative, as well as 18 barges and 18 tugs. The initiative has already obtained purchase orders for 52 ships.
“The contract for the medium-sized vessels reinforces Transpetro’s strategy to increase its logistics capacity to meet Petrobras’ growing production and refining needs. Given the acquisitions we have made during our management, the company’s own fleet will increase from 26 to 42 vessels by 2030.” He said Sergio BacciPresident of Transpetro.
“This is our mission: to make Transpetro grow and contribute to the economic and social development of the country, because most of these constructions will take place in Brazil.”
According to Transpetro, MR1 vessels are expected to achieve gains of up to 20% in fuel efficiency and a reduction of around 30% in greenhouse gas emissions, in accordance with International Maritime Organization (IMO) guidelines.
