PETRONAS seals 20-year deal with MISC to build quintuple LNG vessels


Malaysian owner and operator of floating offshore and energy-related solutions and services, MISC Group, a member of the Petronas group of companies, has entered into a multi-year charter with Petronas LNG Ltd. (PLL), a subsidiary of Petronas, for five new liquefied natural gas carriers (LNGCs).

PLL has signed a 20-year charter agreement with MISC for five 174,000 cubic meter LNG carriers, which will be built in Shanghai, China, with chartering expected to commence between 2029 and 2030. The move is seen as enhancing the reliability of Petronas’ long-term LNG supply, while supporting customers’ energy transition towards a low-carbon future.

The deal has been signed before Ezran MahadzirCEO of Petronas LNG, and Hazarin HassanMISC’s Vice President of Gas Assets and Solutions, following the conclusion of shipbuilding contracts between MISC and Hudong-Zhonghua Shipyard in January and February 2026.

These vessels are expected to incorporate modern, efficiency-driven technologies that comply with cutting-edge environmental and operational standards, including the latest XDF2.1 propulsion technology, shaft generators that enhance fuel efficiency during voyages, and an on-board re-liquefaction station for effective boil-off management.

MISC is scheduled to provide project management services throughout the shipbuilding phase, followed by ship commissioning and management upon delivery, starting in 2029, to ensure greater operational continuity and reliability from construction through commercial operations.

The corporate collaboration is interpreted as reflecting Petronas’ continued focus on enhancing the resilience and reliability of its LNG supply chain through strategic partnerships, while contributing to the development of Malaysia’s energy and maritime capabilities.

This deal comes shortly after MISC Group The label is confirmed of two new generation LNG vessels, strengthening its partnership with ExxonMobil’s SeaRiver Maritime (SRM).
