“Several key components” of the BiMEP-guided wave energy module have been fabricated


Carnegie Clean Energy and its supply chain partners have completed fabrication and fabrication of several key components of the CETO scaled wave energy module that will be deployed at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) as part of the ACHIEVE program, with final component fabrication work packages underway.

During recent months, turnkey components, including dynamic cable and export cable connector, have been delivered, along with complete fabrication of specialist equipment, including primary docking connectors. Manufacture of structural elements, such as the electrical module, described by CETO “brain”Custom metal equipment, including barrels and sheaves, was also finished.

The electrical unit has also been completed, with all pre-tested control and electrical systems assembled and installed on site. The main metal elements of the PTO system, such as the master cylinder, beams and tension elements, are also manufactured.

Final fabrication work is carried out on the three Power Take-off (PTO) frames which act as “power” The unit contains generators, drums and belt systems that produce electricity on board the ship for export to shore. Once manufactured, it will be fitted with its internal components and will undergo a final testing regime before being integrated into the buoyancy actuator and deployed.

Additional equipment nearing completion includes items such as a quick connector developed with Quoceant and mooring tensioners, with the first batch of composite elements ready for assembly ahead of upcoming system testing.

according to CarnegieMany of the components purchased for the CETO unit underwent operational tests by the supplier before being delivered to the company last year. During recent months, functional and mechanical tests on custom components have been completed.

In the coming months, the team will conduct final back-to-back PTO testing of the PTO units at SKF in Germany before integrating them into the thriving operator in the Basque Country, ready for deployment.

Carnegie notes that the testing regime is important to ensure mechanical and electrical systems are validated against modeling and ready for final integration and deployment of the CETO module. Ultimately, all lessons learned through internal and external testing are valuable for commercializing the technology.

Deployment, operation and network connection are scheduled to take place later this year.
