Fuerte Metals has announced an overhaul of governance and engineering oversight of the heap leach facility at its proposed Coffee Gold Project in Yukon.
The company has appointed NewFields Canada as its new “Architect of Record.” The original designers (Forte Dynamics) will assist during the transition to the new team.
Fuerte also established an “Independent Technical Review Board” with two initial members with decades of experience in mining operations. Yukon resident Sebastian Toljesi has also been appointed Vice President of the Coffee Project, adding further northern expertise to the team.
Finally, the company announced that it has applied for membership of the Mining Association of Canada (MAC) and plans to implement the “Towards Sustainable Mining” framework.
These new measures come in the wake of the catastrophic failure at the Eagle Mine, where the collapse of a filter pad released tons of cyanide-contaminated material into the environment. The review boards concluded that the disaster was caused by a combination of design flaws and inadequate oversight, leading to increased scrutiny of all future pile washing projects.
“Our team is taking deliberate steps to enhance how we design, build and operate the Coffee Gold Project,” said Tim Warman, CEO of Fuerte. “We are implementing multiple layers of independent technical review, strengthening oversight, and creating clear lines of accountability across the project.”
According to Fuerte, relationships with the Trōndek Huy’ch’in First Nation, White River First Nation, Selkirk First Nation and Nacho Nyak Don First Nation remain their priority.
