Household debt levels for residents of one major state show a modest decline in the latest annual figures.

According to USAFacts, this number represents the total amount owed by individuals with a credit score for liabilities such as mortgages, student loans, credit cards, and car loans. USAFacts highlights that nationally, 80% of individuals have a credit score.
That number is $745 lower than the previous year after adjusting for inflation. The data also shows that the average person in Illinois owed $9,200 less in debt than the average American in 2025.
Zooming in, USAFacts says mortgage debt accounted for about 67.5% of all Illinois household debt in 2025.
“Mortgages, typically loans taken out to purchase homes, often constitute the largest and longest-term financial obligation for many households. High housing costs combined with extended repayment periods (usually five to thirty years) contribute to mortgage debt’s large share of total household debt.”
Looking at the debt-to-income ratio of Illinois residents by county, USAFacts says Kendall County has the highest debt-to-income ratio in the state at 5.31, indicating that for every $1 of income earned, the average Kendall County resident will have $5.31 in debt.
Meanwhile, Brown County residents had about $0.26 of debt for every $1 of income, the lowest of any county in the state.
