Marine asset ownership and management company Seaspan Corporation and German container shipping major Hapag-Lloyd have completed the first of five ship conversions under a methanol modernization programme.

After the delivery of Seaspan Yangtze, the remaining ships planned for modernization are Seaspan Amazon, Seaspan Ganges, Seaspan Thames and Seaspan Zambezi.
Each upgrade is expected to reduce carbon dioxide emissions by approximately 30,000 to 50,000 metric tons per ship per year when operating on low-carbon methanol, while also extending ship life and enhancing fuel flexibility, Seaspan reported.
“The successful conversion of Seaspan Yangtze together with the planned modernization of her four sister ships is another important step on our ambitious path towards net-zero fleet operations by 2045,” He said Silk LeimcosterGeneral Manager, Fleet, Hapag-Lloyd. “Together with Seaspan, we are showing that retrofitting existing ships with low-carbon methanol can be a practical way to reduce emissions in shipping.”
The modernization program is being implemented under Seaspan’s SAVER programme, which aims to improve ship efficiency, and the CleanBlue initiative, which enables low- and zero-carbon fuel technologies.
“Decarbonisation is not just about building tomorrow’s fleet, it is also about unlocking the full potential of the fleet we have today. Retrofitting and modernizing existing fleets plays a practical, immediate and economical role in accelerating the shipping sector’s decarbonisation journey.” He said Ping ChenChairman, President and CEO of Seaspan.
“The SAVER CleanBlue project highlights Seaspan’s strong customer partnerships, deep technical expertise, and unique platform with integrated JV partners, such as WattSpan Maritime Technology, in executing complex, large-scale modernization projects.”
