The launch of the FSRU brings the next leg in Europe closer to completion


Poland’s gas transmission system operator (TSO), Gaz-System, has unveiled a new milestone in the construction of a new floating storage and regasification unit (FSRU), set to be part of the liquefied natural gas (LNG) terminal located in the Gulf of Gdańsk.

Gaz-System has confirmed that the new FSRU vessel launched in HD Hyundai Heavy Industries The South Korean shipyard will arrive in the Gulf of Gdańsk by the end of 2027 to work on the first FSRU terminal in Poland. The launch is described as one of the most symbolic moments in the shipbuilding process, marking the completion of major structural works and the transition to the next phase of the project.

“We are constantly working on building a modern energy system based on diverse sources and supply routes of natural gas. The project is strategic from the point of view of the state, the security of its citizens and the future of both the Polish economy and the regional gas market.”

The FSRU tanks will hold 170,000 cubic meters of LNG and, once operational, will exceed the terminal’s reconversion capacity of 6 billion cubic meters of natural gas per year. The LNG delivered to the Gulf of Gdańsk will then be transported by sea as natural gas to the national transportation system.

Gas-System claims that contractors still have a lot of complex work to do related to the preparation and integration of processing systems, where one of the most important stages is the installation of the membrane system in the LNG tanks, responsible for the safe storage of LNG, and the installation of a regasification unit, which allows the LNG to be converted back into a gaseous state.

Sławomir HenkThe head of Gas System Company confirmed: “The launch of the FSRU ship is one of the key moments in the implementation of the entire FSRU program and, at the same time, a confirmation that Poland’s strategic energy infrastructure is being developed according to plan.

“We are constantly developing a system that will increase the security of gas supply and give Poland access to additional volumes of gas delivered by sea from different parts of the world. In parallel, we are working on both the offshore and onshore components of the project, thus gradually building successive elements of the country’s modern and resilient energy infrastructure.”

The Polish TSO explains that the coming months will include commissioning and integration of the ship’s systems, including connection to shore power, start-up of generators and boilers, and testing of the ship’s power systems, which will be followed by at-sea and gas testing to ensure correct operation of the propulsion system, safety systems and regasification plants under operating conditions.

The completed FSRU will arrive in the Gulf of Gdańsk at the end of 2027, with regasification services scheduled to begin in the first quarter of 2028. Gas-System insists that work is also progressing on the onshore component of the FSRU program in Poland, where a TBM has arrived at Górki Zachodnie near Gdańsk, where it will carry a mini-tunnel more than a kilometer long to accommodate the offshore gas pipeline being constructed for the plant.

The tunnel will extend under the coastal forest, sand dunes, beach and seabed in the Gulf of Gdańsk, allowing the plant to be connected to the national gas transmission system. Major construction works on the FSRU jetty in Gdańsk Bay are expected to begin in the coming months.

Work on onshore gas pipelines along the Gdańsk-Gostorzyn route is also well advanced, with all elements of the investment project – from offshore infrastructure to the onshore transport network – being implemented in parallel and on schedule. This project represents an important element in expanding the national gas transportation infrastructure and enhancing the resilience of the Polish gas market.
