The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has charged three Russian citizens and two companies for their roles in a cybercrime operation that drained tens of millions of dollars from victims.
Ministry of Justice He says Alexander Alexandrovich Volosovik, Kirill Andreevich Zatolukin, Yulia Vladimirovna Bankova, Medialand LLC, and ML.Cloud LLC are charged with conspiracy to commit computer fraud and aiding and abetting, conspiracy to commit wire fraud, wire fraud, and conspiracy to commit money laundering.
Federal prosecutors say the two Russian-based companies provided online infrastructure that helped cybercriminals carry out malware, ransomware and other computer-based attacks.
According to the indictment, Medialand LLC, owned by Volosovik, and ML.Cloud, owned by Bankova at the time, were based in St. Petersburg, Russia, and provided computer servers and other Internet services.
Authorities say Medialand also operated infrastructure in several other countries, including China, Finland, the Netherlands and the United States.
Prosecutors allege that the companies provided “bulletproof hosting,” a type of infrastructure designed to help customers commit cybercrimes while making it difficult for law enforcement to detect and disrupt their activity.
These types of companies knowingly market or rent their services to cybercriminals, the indictment says.
Authorities allege that Volosovik promoted the companies’ services on criminal forums, highlighting features that might be useful to people involved in cybercrime.
Prosecutors allege that Medialand and ML.Cloud gave criminal agents the tools they needed to infect victims’ computers with malware and ransomware, then demand payments in cash or cryptocurrency.
The companies are also alleged to have supported criminal markets, helped register fraudulent domains, and provided infrastructure used in phishing and brute force attacks.
According to the indictment, criminal groups using Medialand and ML.Cloud targeted 42 victims in 21 US states.
Assistant Public Prosecutor A. Tyson Duva from the Criminal Division of the Ministry of Justice:
“From their offshore haven, these defendants ran the criminal infrastructure that fueled attacks on critical institutions across our country. Their actions put the American public at risk. We will continue to dismantle these networks and protect our critical infrastructure from cybercriminals at home and abroad.”
