A pawn shop chain has agreed to shell out millions of dollars to settle a class-action lawsuit over a data breach that exposed sensitive customer information.
According to the settlement official outletPawn America, which owns and operates pawn shops in Minnesota and Wisconsin, has agreed to pay $3.185 million to settle a lawsuit that was filed after hackers gained access to its network.
On or about September 28, 2021, the company’s network and its affiliates were subjected to a ransomware attack that was detected by Pawn America on October 3, 2021, according to the settlement.
The company began informing customers of the incident on November 19, 2021.
The breach affected at least 530,000 customers, exposing their full names, Social Security numbers, driver’s license numbers, passport numbers, dates of birth, and financial account information.
Members of the settlement class are eligible to recover up to $5,000 for documented losses that arose as a result of the data breach.
Without providing documentation of losses, claimants can get $30, while claimants in California can get $50.
The total proposed settlement includes approximately $1 million for attorneys’ fees.
The deadline to object to the settlement is June 5. Claims must be submitted by July 6. The final court hearing on the case is scheduled for September 9.
