Spain-based consulting, engineering and architecture services firm IDOM has deployed a prototype of a wave energy converter (WEC) at the Biscay Marine Energy Platform (BiMEP) as part of a technology validation of the system and to gain key information for future scalability.
The MARMOK A 5 WEC pontoon is based on oscillating water column technology, which converts wave motion into electricity via turbines, and includes controllable blades, on-board batteries and intelligent control systems, aiming to optimize its operation in real operating conditions on the high seas. An earlier version of the device was tested at BiMEP between 2016 and 2019.
In this latest campaign, the device will be electrically connected to the grid through the Lab platform, integrated into BiMEP infrastructures, which is said to enable the generated energy to be evacuated and the behavior of the system monitored during the testing period.
Over the coming months, the MARMOK A 5 will be evaluated in real operating conditions, with the aim of verifying its performance, durability, reliability and ease of maintenance in the challenging marine environment. The data obtained will be used to evaluate the design and move towards future pre-commercial phases of this technology.
