Wells Fargo employee drains $655,000 from bank vaults and ATMs, manipulates monthly audits to cover tracks: Department of Justice

A jury has found a former employee of Wells Fargo Bank in Mesa, Arizona, guilty of embezzling $655,000 from the bank.

US Department of Justice He says Brooke McDonough, formerly known as Brooke Taylor, was sentenced to 48 months in prison, followed by three years of supervised release.

Court documents displays Prosecutors accused the 35-year-old branch manager of stealing cash from an ATM and a vault inside the branch between June 2021 and February 2022.

McDonough was also accused of tampering with monthly audits by entering inflated numbers into the bank’s systems to hide growing cash shortages.

The scheme was discovered after her resignation, and a federal investigation found that McDonough had deposited most of the stolen money in her personal bank accounts.

Prosecutors say she used different ATMs at multiple bank branches and split deposits into smaller amounts to avoid mandatory currency transaction reports for cash deposits of more than $10,000.

McDonough was convicted of embezzlement by a bank employee, money laundering and structuring.

The Justice Department says the discovery of the theft led to an internal investigation that led to three other bank employees being placed on administrative leave.
