UK-based classification society Lloyd’s Register (LR) has given its blessing to China-based clean energy services provider Wison New Energies (WNE) for a new harsh environment floating production, storage and offloading (FPSO) design featuring an internal tower mooring system.
Lloyd’s Register has granted approval in principle (AiP) to Wison New Energies to design a new indoor FPSO tower for the harsh environment, following an independent concept stage review by LR. This AiP has been interpreted to represent an early technical milestone for the concept of standardized floating production targeting complex offshore conditions.
Ian CrehanGlobal Head of Energy Solutions at Lloyd’s Register commented: “Floating production systems are becoming more complex, and the cost of making wrong early decisions is rising. Independent assurance at the concept stage helps reduce uncertainty and allows projects to move forward with greater technical confidence.”
The UK-based classification society explains that in-tower FPSOs are widely used in difficult meteorological conditions, but remain among the most technically complex floating production systems, with significant interfaces between hull, mooring, risers, and topside layouts.
By completing an independent review of the concept stage, the AiP is said to help demonstrate that the FPSO concept can advance a clearer view of key technical and safety considerations, supporting earlier and more confident decisions by project stakeholders.
Louie Wei MaySenior Product Manager for Wison New Energies’ FPSO Product Center highlighted: “With the harsh environment FPSO design now complete, Wison, in addition to the standard FPSO designs as well as the gas-type FPSO designs already developed, has the portfolio to undertake FPSO design for 90% of the current global FPSO demand.”
Wison New Energies said the approval supports its work to develop FPSO designs that can be deployed more quickly and reliably in challenging offshore areas.
